Indonesia has abundant natural resources with many potential raw materials for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, health supplement, and veterinary medicine industries. To support downstream development and commercialization of research based on Indonesian natural resources, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) plans to establish the Academic Business Unit (UUA) Teaching Industry LabFarma-UP. LabFarma-UP will focus on research, development, industrial-scale production, and commercialization of raw materials based on plant oils, such as sacha inchi oil. It will also develop bee-derived raw materials such as honey, propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom; various simplicia powders, standardized extracts, fractions, and isolates from herbs containing potential bioactive compounds such as curcumin, brazilin, mangostin, and piperine; concentrated marine mineral electrolytes from desalination and evaporation of salt-farm bittern water; as well as fermentation-derived active ingredients, blood-fractionation proteins, and recombinant DNA.
The main strengths of the products include high local content (TKDN), even reaching 100%, supported by Unpad research and development with strong scientific foundations. Production has reached a semi-industrial scale at Unpad Central Laboratory, enabling direct adoption by pharmaceutical, cosmetic, veterinary medicine, and food and beverage industries. Nanopharmaceutical technology, formulation, evaluation, and digital marketing also provide attractive additional advantages.
This Teaching Industry serves as a pentahelix hub (Unpad-government-industry-community-media) by building productive collaborations with institutions such as ITB, STFI, BRIN, pharmaceutical industry R&D groups, government agencies including BPOM, the Ministry of Health, and regional governments, as well as extract and pharmaceutical industry partners such as Simpul Hati, PT. KiosAgro, PT. Berkah Alam Nusantara (BAN), PT. Herbal Indonesia Utama (HIU), PT. Habbatussauda International, PT. Triman, PT. Cendo, PT IMCD, PT. Lunaray Cahya Abadi, CV. Dian Indah Abadi, PT Tissan Nugraha Globalindo, PT. Prapta Cipta Pesona, PT. Paragon Technology & Innovation, PT. Martha Tilaar, PT. Agrotekindo, and other industries. The community network is strengthened through GP Farmasi, GP Jamu, Perkosmi, and others. Unpad itself includes its academic community, alumni and families, and a broad alma mater network. In addition to producing raw materials that meet BPOM standards, the unit is expected to produce pharmaceutical preparations such as natural medicines, supplements, cosmetics, and food and beverage products that meet safety, quality, and efficacy or benefit requirements. This UUA will also become a research and evaluation center for cosmetic, natural medicine, and supplement products serving national and international pharmaceutical preparation industries.
Therefore, Lab Farma Unpad becomes a hub or marketplace for Unpad research-based products, especially from the Faculty of Pharmacy. LabFarma Unpad provides complete solutions from raw materials to finished products based on local natural resources. Its products include herbal extracts, plant oils, bee-derived active ingredients, and marine minerals formulated into pharmaceutical preparations, cosmetics, and animal feed.
Beyond production, LabFarma-UP also serves as a service center for formulation, quality and effectiveness testing, and certification assistance. We support industries in creating products that are not only safe and beneficial, but also compliant with national regulations and globally competitive.
